The Wrestling Man

Sunrise. I'm weary. Night fades.
But the memory remains
Of wrestling with the strength
Of an unknown man on the road.

I know not why he chooses me.
His hand touches, and bones
Break in my leg and hip;
Bringing an end to our battle.

I ask his name. He answers:
Why must you know my name?
Why does it matter to you?
Is it not enough I chose you?

There on the road to Penuel
My mind clears; I realize
This is He whom I worship.
Whose Name I dare not say.

"You have struggled mightily
With the revered living Elohim.
Now I will name you Israel
Who shall lead My children."

In consequence my people
Do not consume the tendon.
Nor do they doubt the Lord.
The One who blessed us all.
