The connecting rods are part of what is known as the coupling system. An American-standard locomotive with four drivers is a "four-coupled," a Pacific or Hudson with six drivers is a "six-coupled." A Mikado is an "eight-coupled." A number of 10-coupled, and even a few 12-coupled locomotives WERE built, although these behemoths stretched the limits of connecting rod and metallurgy technology.
