Since the axle cranks and connecting rods are deliberately off-center to the driver axles, they cause the driving wheels to jump up and down, often causing severe track damage. The counterbalances help offset this hopping motion. The connecting rods also help even out sudden jerks of the piston action inside the steam chest.
