The Lancashire Witch, built in 1829 by George Stephenson, was the first locomotive entirely suspended on leaf springs and pedestals. Stephenson, along with his son and partner, Robert, were the most innovative locomotive builders in the world. They tested virtually every invention between 1820 and 1850, and applied to their products anything that worked well. Railroads were the hottest new technology, and Stephenson and Son was "THE" company to buy from—they shipped locomotives to every country in the world.
