The Robert Stephenson-built Phoenix (1830) was the first locomotive to feature a smokebox, and his prize-winning Rocket became extremely successful after being rebuilt with one. Largely through the publicity of Rocket and Stephenson, the smokebox became a universal feature applied to every subsequent locomotive built anywhere in the world. Though patented by Stephenson, the smokebox was used to such great extent that he gave up trying to collect royalties.
