When tracks are wet or icy, locomotives lose traction. Clean, dry sand is mechanically poured onto the rails immediately in front of the drivers through pipes down the sides of the boiler, to assist with adhesion. The sand is stored on top of the boiler in a sand dome, where the heat keeps it dry and warms it on cold days.
