The first boiler explosion (inevitable, given the metallurgy technology of the period) was recorded in 1815 at Newcastle, England, killing 14 people and injuring 43. Safety apparatus, including pressure gauges and safety valves, was quickly added as standard equipment, but as boiler pressures climbed and crews were sent untrained to operate them, boiler disasters continued to occur.
