A safety measure of sorts was invented by Sir Goldsworthy Gurney in 1826. This fusible plug is made of a softer metal than the crown sheet. If it is uncovered by water, the fusible plug will melt before the harder steel surrounding it and release steam into the firebox, dampening down the fire and avoiding a catastrophe.
