Many engineers had their whistles custom-made with additional pairs of cups (or chimes), up to eight have been documented. Some were so proficient they could play melodies on their whistles. Often, a locomotive could be identified coming into a town just from the sound of its whistle. When these engineers were assigned another locomotive, they unbolted "their whistle" and took it with them.
