The so-called "long-travel" valve—meaning the valve traveled as far in its stroke as the piston—was invented in England in 1840. However, it was not adopted there—even though British master mechanics knew it substantially increased their cylinder efficiency. When the "art" of metallurgy technology improved after 1900, use of the long-travel valve became wide-spread in the United States.
