The first locomotive to fasten the cylinders to the locomotive frame instead of the boiler was built in 1831 for the Bolton (Lancashire) and Leigh Railway. It had a single pair of five-foot-tall driving wheels, giving it considerable speed but very little pulling power. Frame-mounting the cylinders became more practical as locomotives grew larger, until the cylinder mounting bracket (or "saddle") actually became the forward end cap of the frame.
