All D&SNG and C&TS locomotives are 2-8-2s, known as the Mikado type, nicknamed Mikes, built in the 1920s. Mikados were first developed in 1897 for the Japanese Railways, hence the type name, which comes from Gilbert and Sullivan's light opera The Mikado, then very popular. During World War II, they were briefly re-categorized as MacArthurs, after the popular general, Douglas MacArthur, but the name fell into disuse after the Japanese surrender.
