Number Boards

Used as identification for either the locomotive or its train, number boards are illuminated by an electric bulb inside the casing. The number board on the headlight was often used to show "scheduled" trains as published in the timetable (i.e.: 461—First Silverton northbound) and "extras," sometimes merely numbered for the assigned locomotive and direction of travel, as X476W (extra #476 westbound). A second set of number boards is mounted beside the smokestack and, as in earlier days on the D&RGW, the locomotive number is always displayed here.
