The hot gases from the firebox, after circulating through the boiler tubes, are forced upward into the smokestack by exhaust steam in the smokebox. The resulting light-gray mixture of smoke and water vapor indicates the locomotive is operating efficiently. In the western United States, firemen were often fined or disciplined for letting their smoke get too black.
