The first use of locomotive-mounted sanding devices was in 1836. A plague of grasshoppers in Pennsylvania caused extensive delays to trains until sand was used to keep locomotives from slipping on the crushed insects. At first, the sand was fed by gravity, but as winter operations became prevalent, steam-powered sand-feed systems were developed to insure continuous availability.
