On the first run of a locomotive from New York to New Jersey in 1837, the whistle (still a crowd-gathering novelty) was used so much the locomotive ran out of steam for the cylinders. This problem plagued engineers (and firemen) of smaller engines until the end of steam power in the 1950s.
