The head brakeman must sometimes come forward to confer with the locomotive crew when the train is in motion. A ladder on the rear of the tender is provided, so he has access from the tender's rear steps or from the platform of the first passenger car. During switchyard maneuvers, the switchman can also hang onto the ladder to see ahead or behind and give hand motions to the train and locomotive crews.
