Robert Stephenson was the first to apply sanding mechanisms to locomotives in 1841. Sand was already well-recognized for its gripping qualities, but until Stephenson, required the fireman to walk beside the locomotive dropping sand by hand in front of the drivers. Steam-operated sanding systems were developed in 1876.
