The first steel boiler in North America was the Scotia, built in 1860 for the Great Western Railway of Canada. Various types of "lagging"—or insulation—has been tried on boilers, including wood, cotton-batting, and asbestos (used in the U.S. until the end of steam power), and finally magnesium.
