The mechanical injector was invented by Frenchman Henri Giffard and first used in 1859. It was refined and improved numerous times in England (by 1860, there were more than 30 patents for injectors). The exhaust-steam powered injector was introduced in 1874, using steam from the piston exhaust that would otherwise pass uselessly up the blast pipe.
