The tender's rear-facing headlight is called a back-up light because it is used only for reverse operations, such as returning down the mainline after a helper run (assisting another locomotive by pulling or pushing the train up steep grades, and then returning trainless and backward to the helper terminal). Other uses of the back-up light include switching or moving the locomotive through the yards to the roundhouse.
