When an engine reaches its terminal and is serviced, running boards provide handy access to equipment mounted high on the locomotive boiler. At the roundhouse, it's common to see two or three D&SNG employees standing on a locomotive's running board inspecting different things (sand domes, throttles, electrical generators, etc.). Running boards also serve as places to lay tools when working on the running gear.
