The modern headlights, running lights, number boards, and cab lights run on electricity produced by a small generator mounted on top of the boiler ahead of the cab. Steam is diverted from the throttle to this generator, which contains a small steam turbine. The generator makes a small but noticeable whining sound and it is always on when the locomotive is producing steam.
