Only in the United States, did bar frames become common. The beauty of the bar frame was the ease of manufacture and maintenance. A good blacksmith or riveter could create or repair a bar frame locomotive without need for a huge erecting facility—an advantage in the lightly-populated predominantly-agrarian United States. Bury's Liverpool was the first bar-frame unit exported to America in 1833.
