From rear of the cab floor to the front of the tender, a floor extension called the footplate rests on the cross frames of the cab and tender. The fireman walks back and forth across this carrying his shovels of coal. Under the footplate is a drawbar, a solid steel bar which attaches the tender to the locomotive.
