Water makes up more than half the contents of the tender and must be poured through the tender's filling hatch from the trackside water plug (or water tank). It is not unusual for an engine crew to overfill the tender tender reservoir, often treating passengers to the sight of water spilling over the tender sides. The filling hatch is also used as an accessway when cleaning or maintenance is needed inside the tender.
