Switch engines usually have bumper steps instead of pilots, used by switchmen when the locomotive moves. Some photos of the D&RGW (D&SNG and C&TS) locomotives show snow plows bolted to their pilot beams, for use in light snow on branch lines. Some locomotives, specially streamlined passenger types, have retractable couplers which can be lowered into pockets behind streamlined casings.
