The first Walschaerts valve gear in the United States were also on a Fairlie-type locomotive, with two boilers facing opposite directions and the cab and fuel bunker sandwiched between. William Mason's Philadelphia works built the engine in 1874. The locomotive was described as "flying apart all over the place," presumably by observers not familiar with the Walschaerts of two "engines" flailing away in different directions.
