The drop grate, which allows terminal service crews to easily clean the firebox of ash and cinders, was introduced by Edward Bury in 1852. Because it was made of iron or steel bars, it could be fabricated or repaired by a blacksmith in relatively primitive conditions (ideal for the growing but mostly rural early United States).
