Engineers hate to run out of steam, which reduces the train's pulling power and often slows (or completely stops) the train. A stalled locomotive is a dispatcher's nightmare, since the halted train blocks the railroad, preventing other trains from passing. It is the fireman's job to maintain as much steam pressure as possible without tripping the safety valve, which can release as much as half a boiler's contents before closing.
