The fireman shovels coal through the butterfly doors in the cab, carefully spreading it around the grate where it burns evenly and at high temperature. After burning, coal ash falls through the grate into the ash pan, which is emptied at the locomotive terminal after every run. Depending on the type of coal (from high-grade, clean-burning anthracite to cheap lignite), grates can grow to tremendous area—requiring special locomotive designs.
