Locomotive water must be treated to reduce its mineral content or the boiler would quickly fill with unwanted sediment and require expensive cleaning—or worse, foam up so badly that no steam could be produced. In some locales, the high cost of treating local water so substantially increased steam locomotive operating costs that operations were curtailed during some "seasons," leading to quick adoption of the diesel-electric locomotive as a much-cheaper alternative.
