Because the cab surrounds the backhead of the firebox, it gets hot, especially on clear, sunny southern Colorado days. A vent was installed in the cab roof so the hot air could rise and be sucked away from the engineer and fireman. The cab vent is rarely closed, except during torrential downpours-- even in winter.
