Builder's Plate

Locomotive manufacturers proudly affixed their emblem or logo (cast on a steel plate) to the smokebox of every newly-constructed steam locomotive, along with a second plate showing the engine's pedigree—builder number, classification, and manufacturing date. If a locomotive is rebuilt, renumbered, sold or traded, or damaged, these builders plates help properly identify it for the railroad's records.
