When the locomotive is backing up, the tender precedes it. Since the rules require a headlight at all times when in motion, all tenders are equipped with lights pointing backward. These are usuallyas on the D&SNG K-28s, K-36s, and K-37smounted on the deck of the tender behind the water reservoir and the filling hatch, but back-up lights are sometimes hung in the center of the tender's rear wall.
