The oddest were the cylindrical models designed in 1901 by Cornelius Vanderbilt for his grandfather's New York Central Railroad and which became known as "Vanderbilt" tenders (they carried fuel oil for the locomotives, so didn't need a rectangle profile). The Vanderbilt tender was widely used on the Canadian National Railway after 1924.
