Air and Water Hoses

Water is transferred through a hose under the cab floor from the tender, alongside the firebox and over the crown sheet, to the feedwater injectors into the boiler. Air for the train brakes is run in high-pressure hoses with quick-release pressure couplings between the locomotive and tender, and between the cars. Since the tender is not actually part of the locomotive, using hoses instead of piping makes them easier to separate for maintenance.
