Lucius Beebe and Charles Clegg, perhaps at Cumbres Pass

The caption from the dust cover of Hear the Train Blow says Lucius Beebe and Charles Clegg purchased a private car on the Virginia and Truckee, intimating the authors are on it. In the lower right, however, are what appear to be the Cumbres Pass snowsheds. Yard scuttlebutt in Durango in the late 1950s was that Messers Beebe and Clegg owned (or leased) the green private car Nomad. As V&T had no snowsheds and Rio Grande Southern was already gone, it makes sense if the Durango yard rumors were true that the authors would be at Cumbres on a beautiful summer day, preparing for the publicity tour of a new book.

K-28 Number 476 moves slowly from the roundhouse to the train

Cylinder cocks wide open to vent condensing steam, K-28 #476, moves slowly from the roundhouse to the train. In five minutes, the whistle will blow twice and the "Trip to Yesteryear" will begin. Though once a profitable freight railroad, a decline in mining sparked a decline in railroad revenues, until tourism alone supports this famous little narrow gauge. Little #476, a Mikado-type (2-8-2) locomotive weighing in at a mere 127,000 lbs., was built in 1923 as part of a group of 10., Affectionately known by her crews as a "sports model" because of her clean, racy side profiles—the locomotive's air pumps are clearly visible on her smokebox front. Note the larger K-37 locomotive at left rear, still carrying the doghouse on its tender.
