The guide is intended as a guide for healthy humans more than two years of age. It is not a rigid prescription but general information that lets you choose a healthful diet that's right for you.

Your risk of getting certain diseases can be reduced by following the guide, which uses the most up-to-date information from nutrition scientists around the world.

THE FOOD GUIDE *

  1. Oils, Fats and Sweets Group—Use sparingly; provides only calories

  2. Milk, Yogurt and Cheese Group—2 to 3 servings per day; important for protein, calcium, iron and zinc

  3. Fish, Meat, Poultry, Dry Beans, Eggs and Nuts Group—2 to 3 servings per day; important for protein, calcium, iron and zinc

  4. Vegetable Group—3 to 5 servings per day; valuable for vitamins, minerals and fiber

  5. Fruit Group—2 to 4 servings per day; valuable for vitamins, minerals and fiber

  6. Bread, Cereal, Rice and Pasta Group—6 to 11 servings per day; the majority of your daily food servings should be from this group
